The Songwriters
Holland-Dozier-Holland is a songwriting and production team made up of Lamont Dozier and brothers Brian Holland and Edward Holland, Jr.. The trio wrote and arranged many of the songs making up the Motown sound that dominated American popular music in the 1960s. During their tenure at Motown Records from 1962-1967, Dozier and Brian Holland were the composers/producers for each song, and Eddie Holland wrote the lyrics and arranged the vocals. When the trio left Motown, they continued to work as a production team (with Eddie Holland being added to the producer credits), and as a songwriting team until about 1974. In 1990, the trio was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
SONGWRITING TIPS
Tips on Lyrics from the book
1. Delivery. Avoid muffled vocals. It’s important that the listeners comprehends the words correctly, otherwise you risk making the story line confusing and un-connectable.
2. Attempt to use words, phrasing and storylines that are engaging. Let the listener identify with your mood, emotion, situation, and be believable.
3. Make sure your lyrics are cohesive and not confusing. Abstract lyrics are great as an art form but difficult to market to the mainstream consumers who want to comprehend your storyboard and more importantly make that mental and visual connection.
4. Make sure the lyrical delivery fits well with the melody, music and tempo. Words, when sung are delivered in phrasing which is separated or stressed by syllables. Consider the fact that the syllables must fit proportionately into the rhythm, tempo and timing of the music, aka “cadence”. Bad cadence creates awkward and forced phrasing.

If you love Bob Dylan and Neil Young then you’ll love Braden’s ability to craft a lyric with great imagery and deliver it with simplicity. His lyrics are heartfelt and genuine and his vocals are the perfect storyteller.
Songwriting Tip
Do not insist on singing your own songs unless they fit the genre, tone delivery, message and energy of the song. Braden’s vocals match the tone of the song, fit the genre of the song and the lyrical delivery is believable and easy to connect with. NETWORKING FOR SONGWRITERS
As an Industry Insider and Music Publisher I can assure you that networking works. Get out there and share your music, ideas, and talents with others. How do you do that? Join a songwriting organization or network. Internet is great but nothing beats a face to face appearance. Songwriters associations are inexpensive, sometimes free, and almost always have industry guest speakers such as A&R reps, Entertainment Lawyers, Publishers, and more. Meet the industry face to face, build and pitch your music! I have published several artists who I met at these events!
